Das 1875/76 anonym im Verlag von F[riedrich] L[ouis] Münchmeyer in Dresden erschienene "Buch der Liebe" ist das merkwürdigste und erstaunlichste Buch Karl Mays. Obwohl es zahlreiche, zum Teil erst jetzt ermittelte Fremdtexte enthält, darf es zugleich als sein Erstlingsbuch gelten. Begonnen auf Wunsch des Verlegers, der das von der Zensur verbotene, von einem unbekannten Verfasser stammende Aufklärungswerk "Die Geschlechtskrankheiten des Menschen und ihre Heilung" in neuem Gewand wieder auf den Markt bringen wollte, wurde das "Buch der Liebe" unter der Hand des jungen und ehrgeizigen Schriftstellers Karl May doch weit mehr als eine Auftragsarbeit. Zwar bildete das Aufklärungsbuch noch immer das Zentrum des nun dreiteiligen Werks und in den Schlussteil nahm May auch umfangreiche, von ihm nur wenig gemilderte lasziv-erotische Stellen aus einem anderen Münchmeyer-Werk über die Geschichte der Prostitution auf ("Die Geheimnisse der Venustempel aller Zeiten und Völker"), aber die von ihm neu geschriebenen oder zusammengestellten Texte eröffneten eine wesentlich umfassendere Perspektive auf das Phänomen der Liebe, beleuchteten es in ihrer ganzen kulturgeschichtlichen, philosophischen und religiösen Vielfalt und gingen darüber hinaus mit einer wissenschaftlichen Ernsthaftigkeit den großen Fragen nach dem Ursprung, der Natur und dem Sinn der Schöpfung nach, bis hin zu den damals vieldiskutierten Evolutionstheorien Charles Darwins und Ernst Haeckels oder dem skurrilen "Ätherismus" des heute vergessenen Philosophen Philipp Spiller, wie man sie von dem frühen, im wesentlichen autodidaktisch gebildeten May bisher kaum erwarten konnte.
