Dissension, defined as a propositional attitude of the speaker's disagreement is classified into four categories according to its scope. Its occurrences in German discussions were analyzed according to their linguistic expressions and 'Face-work'. No specific linguistic means for expressing Dissension was found, although most cases display semantically negative lexical components. 38 Face-work strategies were defined based on Brown/Levinson (1978, 1987). Linguistic elements from many word classes as well as devices such as Deixis manipulation were used for Face-work purposes.

Ernest Bevin was Great Britain’s first Labour foreign minister in the post-WWII era. His Middle East policy rested on economic and military partnership with the Arab states and was designed to uphold Britain’s empire status in the region. Yet Arab partnership depended on the resolution of the Palestine problem, a receding prospect given Britain’s growing reliance on US economic and military assistance as exemplified in the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry and how its recommendations were utilized by the White House and President Truman to suit electoral needs. Truman’s Yom Kippur statement endorsing the creation of an independent Jewish state in Palestine finally led Bevin to surrender the problems to the United Nations. By doing so he brought an informal end to the British mandate.

Fleet Admiral Mikus Padmon, a skilled commander and war hero in his early fifties, is known as a risk taker and a stickler for rules and proper protocol, although he himself often breaks them. A man responsible for winning two wars for the Galactic League, he’s recently been reassigned to the academy as a sort of punishment. But when Manbiya petitions for entry into the Galactic League, usually only a formality, the Vercorians protest and Padmon has been called back into active service to lead the mediation. Behind the scenes, a plan is underway for the alien race of Vercorians to resume the invasion plans of the Manbiyan system initiated years ago. The Vercorians believe Manbiyan is a part of their empire and they intend to keep it. Padmon must use all of his skills if he stands any chance of holding off the Vercorians who have partnered with a race of reptilians known as the Ratarans. A fierce war unlike anything previously known is on the verge of commencing.

This volume focusses on contradiction as a key concept in the Humanities and Social Sciences. By bringing together theoretical and empirical contributions from a broad disciplinary spectrum, the volume advances research in contradiction and on contradictory phenomena, laying the foundations for a new interdisciplinary field of research: Contradiction Studies. Dealing with linguistic phenomena, urban geographies, business economy, literary writing practices, theory of the social sciences, and language education, the contributions show that contradiction, rather than being a logical exemption in the Aristotelian sense, provides a valuable approach to many fields of socially, culturally, and historically relevant fields of research.

This is the first direct literary adaptation of Vergil's Aeneid. The present study demonstrates how, in less than one thousand lines, Ovid revisits the epic world of Aeneas and subjects it to a reading that is a paradigm of critical analysis, a statement of originality, and a powerful claim to the epic heritage and Vergilian succession.
