Gabriel Brockwell, aesthete, poet, philosopher, disaffected twenty-something decadent, is thinking terminal. His philosophical enquiries, the abstractions he indulges, and how these relate to a life lived, all point in the same direction. His destination is Wonderland. The nature and style of the journey is all that's to be decided. Taking in London, Tokyo, Berlin and the Galapagos Islands, Lights Out In Wonderland documents Gabriel Brockwell's remarkable global odyssey. Committed to the pursuit of pleasure and in search of the Bacchanal to obliterate all previous parties, Gabriel's adventure takes in a spell in rehab, a near-death experience with fugu ovaries, a sexual encounter with an octopus, and finally an orgiastic feast in the bowels of Berlin's majestic Tempelhof Airport. Along the way we see a character disintegrate and re-shape before our eyes. Lights Out In Wonderland carries you through its many corridors of delight and horror on the back of Gabriel's voice, which is at once skeptical, idealistic, broken and optimistic. An allegorical banquet and a sly commentary on these End Times and the march towards insensate banality, DBC Pierre's third novel completes a loose trilogy of fictions, each of which stands alone as a joyful expression of the human spirit.

When it comes to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and depression, everything you believe is a lie. With research gleaned from the National Institutes of Health, T.S. Wiley and Bent Formby deliver staggering findings: Americans really are sick from being tired. Diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and depression are rising in our population. We’re literally dying for a good night’s sleep. Our lifestyle wasn’t always this way. It began with the invention of the lightbulb. When we don’t get enough sleep in sync with seasonal light exposure, we fundamentally alter a balance of nature that has been programmed into our physiology since day one. This delicate biological rhythm rules the hormones and neurotransmitters that determine appetite, fertility, and mental and physical health. When we rely on artificial light to extend our day until 11 p.m., midnight, and beyond, we fool our bodies into living in a perpetual state of summer. Anticipating the scarce food supply and forced inactivity of winter, our bodies begin storing fat and slowing metabolism to sustain us through the months of hibernation and hunger that never arrive. Our own survival instinct, honed over millennia, is now killing us. Wiley and Formby also reveal: -That studies from our own government research prove the role of sleeplessness in diabetes, heart disease, cancer, infertility, mental illness, and premature aging -Why the carbohydrate-rich diets recommended by many health professionals are not only ridiculously ineffective but deadly -Why the lifesaving information that can turn things around is one of the best-kept secrets of our day. Lights Out is one wake-up call none of us can afford to miss.

In his customary pose as the grumpiest of grumpy old men, Raymond Briggs contemplates old age and death... and doesn’t like them much. Illustrated with Briggs’s inimitable pencil drawings, Time for Lights Out is a collection of short pieces, some funny, some melancholy, some remembering his wife who died young, others about the joy of grandchildren, of walking the dog... Ryan Rossetti and Jake Thomas were the two Major League-bound rivals on their high school baseball team. Until Ryan hurt his pitching arm and landed a $10 dollar an hour life as a house painter. Lucky Jake made it all the way, and he and his $10 million signing bonus are heading back for a publicity-motivated homecoming weekend. But he's got a nasty surprise in store: Ryan is involved in an intense, addictive relationship with Jake's fiancé Christina, who now faces a choice between love in a Brooklyn tenement or a heartless marriage on Easy Street. None of the three have any idea what's about to play out in the streets they once all called home... Lights Out is a razor sharp crime novel that brilliantly combines biting social satire, explosive suspense, and honest, revealing human drama. These eight stories are about the relationships and interactions of ordinary, but interesting, people who find themselves in unusual situations within a recent actual historical context. In some a character confronts, interprets, or comes to terms with, the present by reflecting on the past. Most of the settings are on Vancouver Island -- Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley, the West Coast -- and feature characters in action, in engagement with their environment. "The Night Tony Shot the Lights Out" three WWII veterans find coming home to be a difficult adjustment. "My Former Yugoslavia" in 1963 a young man travels on foot to a remote village in Bosnia to try to find the estranged sister of a friend in Duncan. "Annie Crook" a woman, age 90, contemplates her life of solitude, with reflections of her childhood and living in hardship in a coal camp 75 years earlier. "Rhymes With Love"; a 60-something white man and a 40-something Chinese woman find themselves living together temporarily in the same house. The inevitable relationship ensues, which is complicated by the fact that she is the daughter of his former lover. "That Good Cahors Wine"; a man walks into the wilderness alone on an overnight pilgrimage to see Canada's highest waterfall. "The Shed" a story of dying man's reconciliation with his former best friend whom he has blamed for a betrayal as the result of a love triangle. "Short Haul"; in a chance encounter, a man finds he is sitting in a barber shop with his childhood hockey hero. "The Interlude"; A businessman befriends an alcoholic street person and finds that they have something in common -- not enough, however, to prevent a sad ending.

How could General Electric--perhaps America's most iconic corporation--suffer such a swift and sudden fall from grace? This is the definitive history of General Electric's epic decline, as told by the two Wall Street Journal reporters who covered its fall. Since its founding in 1892, GE has been more than just a corporation. For generations, it was job security, a solidly safe investment, and an elite business education for top managers. GE electrified America, powering everything from lightbulbs to turbines, and became fully integrated into the American societal mindset as few companies ever had. And after two decades of leadership under legendary CEO Jack Welch, GE entered the twenty-first century as America's most valuable corporation. Yet, fewer than two decades later, the GE of old was gone. Lights Out examines how Welch's handpicked successor, Jeff Immelt, tried to fix flaws in Welch's profit machine, while stumbling headlong into mistakes of his own. In the end, GE's traditional win-at-all-costs driven culture seemed to lose its direction, which ultimately caused the company's decline on both a personal and organizational scale. Lights Out details how one of America's all-time great companies has been reduced to a cautionary tale for our times.
