Informative and thought-provoking, this book from one of the most interesting and original thinkers currently looking at human sexuality provides a fresh view of pornography. Clearly and concisely written for young adults. Pornography addresses a very important issue in a rational, analytical manner. Society tells us that we aren't supposed to look at pornography — much less talk publicly about it — but the Internet has created unprecedented access to porn over the last few years. This book deals with pornography as a social issue, translating the best academic research into reader-friendly language. "[The Groundwork Guides] are excellent books, mandatory for school libraries and the increasing body of young people prepared to take ownership of the situations and problems previous generations have left them." — Globe and Mail

Written for a broad audience and grounded in cutting-edge, contemporary scholarship, this volume addresses some of the key questions asked about pornography today. What is it? For whom is it produced? What sorts of sexualities does it help produce? Why should we study it, and what should be the most urgent issues when we do? What does it mean when we talk about pornography as violence? What could it mean if we discussed pornography through frameworks of consent, self-determination and performance? This book places the arguments from conservative and radical anti-porn activists against the challenges coming from a new generation of feminist and queer porn performers and educators. Combining sensitive and detailed discussion of case studies with careful attention to the voices of those working in pornography, it provides scholars, activists and those hoping to find new ways of understanding sexuality with the first overview of the histories and futures of pornography.

In Nancy Bauer’s view, most feminist philosophers are content to work within theoretical frameworks that are false to human beings’ everyday experiences. Here she models a new way to write about pornography, women’s self-objectification, hook-up culture, and other contemporary phenomena, and in doing so she raises basic questions about philosophy.

This study of pornographic magazine photographs -- softcore, hardcore, transsexual/transvestite -- analyzes the visual code of these images. It engages questions about masculinity and masculine sexuality such as "Is there a necessary relation between difference and phallic desire?" "Can the masculine subject imagine otherness?" "Is there a will-to-asceticism in this (masculine) sexual surrender to indifferentiation?"

"This book assesses American, Canadian, and Swedish legal challenges to the explosive spread of pornography within their significantly different democratic systems and constructs a political and legal theory for effectively challenging the sex industry under law. The obstacles to this challenge are exposed as more ideological and political than strictly legal, although they often play out in the legal arena. The pornography industry is documented to exploit vulnerable populations in making its materials. A thorough analytical review of empirical studies using complementing methods demonstrates that using pornography substantially contributes to consumers becoming more sexually aggressive, on average desensitizing them and contributing to a demand for more subordinating, aggressive, and degrading materials. Consumers are also often found wishing to imitate pornography with unwilling partners; many demand sex from prostituted people, who have few or no alternatives. Most young men regularly consume pornography. Legal challenges to the harms are shown to be more effective under legal systems that promote equality and when the laws empower those most harmed, in contrast to state-enforced regulations (e.g., criminal obscenity laws). Drawing on feminist theory, among others, this book argues that pornography is among the linchpins of sex inequality, contending that a civil society forum can empower those harmed, with representatives who have more substantial incentives to address them. This book explains why democracies fail to address the harms of pornography and offers a political and legal theory for making the necessary changes. The insights can be applied to other intractable problems of hierarchy"--

Pornography catapulted to the forefront of the American women's movement in the 1980s. In Battling Pornography, Carolyn Bronstein locates the origins of anti-pornography sentiment in the turbulent social and cultural history of the late 1960s and 1970s. Based on extensive original archival research, the book reveals that the seeds of the movement were planted by groups who protested the proliferation of advertisements, Hollywood films and other mainstream media that glorified sexual violence. Over time, feminist leaders redirected the emphasis from violence to pornography to leverage rhetorical power. Battling Pornography presents a fascinating account of the rise and fall of this significant American social movement and documents the contributions of influential activists on both sides of the pornography debate, including some of the best-known American feminists.

Aggression in Pornography focusses on the issue of violence in mainstream pornography and examines what we know, what we think we know, and what are some surprising research findings and insights about the place of violence within pornography today. The authors first review the modern pornography industry, theoretical claims about pornography as violence, and the ways in which aggression has been defined and measured in previous research. Next, they review the findings of empirical research on violent content in pornographic materials and the potential effects of such content on audiences . The main part of the book relies on systematically collected empirical data, as the authors analyze the content of hundreds of pornographic videos as well as more than a hundred interviews with men and women who regularly watch pornography. These analyses provide surprising insights regarding the prevalence of and trends in violent content within mainstream pornography, the popularity of violent and non-violent content among viewers, and variations in aggression by race and sexual orientation. As such, Aggression in Pornography will be of interest to students and researchers in sociology, gender and sexuality studies, and media and film studies, as well as to wider audiences who are interested in today’s pornography industry and to policymakers looking to devise empirically driven policies regarding this industry and its potential effects.

Does pornography have harmful effects on individuals? What are these effects and how should society deal with them? The authors of this volume attempt to answer these and other important questions by placing pornography within the broader context of theories of fundamental human nature. Their approach reveals a systematic interweaving of social science, morality and the law from three different perspectives: conservative//moralistic, liberal and feminist. The book will be an invaluable contribution to current research on pornography and obscenity.
