The book contains sixteen sermons from the book of Job. I take something as horrible as Jobs condition, and I compare it with something as totally constraining as a straitjacket. The book traces Job through the many seasons of his situation and will help people realize that, while they may indeed have some extremely difficult times, they too can find some hope and solace with God, as did Job.

For most of the ninety-three years between 1851, when the California State Legislature faced the problem of what to do with criminals, until 1944, when it finally organized the state's four prisons into one adult penal system, the prisons at San Quentin and Folsom were the only places of incarceration for the state's felons. Bookspan traces the development of a system emphasizing deterrence and retribution to one receptive to reform and rehabilitation. ø "This is the story," writes Bookspan, "of the penury and personality struggle through which California developed a prison system to assess, and to address, individual needs while retaining its custodial institutions. It is a story of the West, even though eastern penology, with all of its overtones of moral duty, provided the language for prison reform. In a state where chaos preceded the assertion of normative rule, fear, not hope, formed the governing principle of penology. It is a story of America because true reform on an expanded sense of individual potential."

'If God is too indifferent, or too non-existent to take care of His creation, then clearly it's up to Me.'Morgen Tanjenz is a lawyer with an overactive sense of justice. His mission in life is to reward the virtuous, punish the ignorant and avenge those who won't avenge themselves. His favourite pastime is 'life sculpture' - anonymously intervening in the lives of strangers to change their destiny in ways he thinks they deserve. But Morgen isn't the only one changing lives in the city. A serial killer is on the prowl and taunting the police in letters to the local rag. But, as the body count rises, Detective Sergeant Blacksnake Fowler can hardly focus on the job with so many distractions: his boss hates him, his deputy is trying to undermine him and the woman he loves is having an affair. In the cicada-throbbing heat of a Sydney summer, the threads of a strange story become entangled in a wild conclusion no one will see coming. 'a ripsnorter of a ride through the dark heart of the burbs... may just be Australia's answer to American Psycho.' Kirsten Krauth, just_a_girl 'Sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing, and always compelling... with a super-original premise and a one-of-a-kind protagonist'. Tony Wilson, Making News 'A disturbingly good read. Unnerving and darkly comic.' Stuart Quin, Ealing Studios Australia

A comment from the author, "This book started as a dream. After I woke up, the idea of the murder of the psychic took shape and then the story started to enfold." Even if you are mildly interested or are curious about Metaphysics, you should enjoy this book. There are so many possibilities that one of them could even apply to you and your life. If you don't believe in the paranormal, you will enjoy this as a fantasy. Have you ever had a bad time in your life where you asked, Why me'? This book may answer your question. It's possible that there is such a thing as reincarnation and that could be the why' in your question. You could have done something in another life that caused that bad situation in this life. If you think you can get away with a crime, Ann Davis tells you, "You may think that some criminals have escaped from the justice system. I really believe that they have not escaped from the Higher Power and will be punished." We must all pay for the bad or negative things we do in whatever lives we live. If we live decent lives, we are rewarded with a decent next life. After all, do we really want to, possibly, live a miserable life; even if it is in a future life? We are given free will at birth. We have the choice to live positive or negative lives. Think about what you are doing to others, as well as to yourselves.

Sickle Cell Anemia is a horrible disease to an outsider looking in. However, to me, it is no different than any other life-threatening disease. The only difference is Sickle Cell Anemia does not get the much-needed recognition it truly deserves. People know little or nothing about the disease because it is not seen as important like other well-known diseases. I personally have an issue because I have Sickle Cell Anemia and have always been an advocate for it all my life. Sickle Cell has affected me as well many of my family members and there are quite a lot of other people in the world who suffer from Sickle Cell Anemia. There are so many people in the world who have sickle cell anemia or know someone who has it. I decided to write my personal story because it has been quite a journey for me as child, a teenager, young adult, and my middle-aged adult. I have had some good days, and some bad days, but God has kept me so, I want to complain. I feel as if I been on an emotional roller coaster that just took me on some highs and then lows over a million times, and the ride just will not stop. I have had some real good times on this roller coastal ride, and said “it’s o.k. I can ride this to the wheels fall off. However, God will never, ever give me or anyone of us more than we can handle. I learned to weather the storm over the years. I have always been living according to what I expect my expiration date was going to be. I really thought that I was going to die when I was 17 years old. I lived my life everyday worried.

»Ein absolut einzigartiges Leseerlebnis.« The Independent

It’s not easy being an Asian American in China, where residents of big cities believe that Asians, including those born and raised in English-speaking countries, are not qualified to teach English. In a country of 1.3 billion people where studying English is as popular as having the latest electronic gadget, this can be a huge problem. Author Jada Tan Rufo, descended from a Chinese immigrant who took a Filipino name when he came to the United States, takes up the challenge to teach in the country of her ancestors. Her detailed memoir Banana Girl takes readers on a journey throughout China, describing the lows—such as working for a corrupt and inept boss— to the highs, the time she spends with her eager young students and the chance to travel inside the beautiful country. The vast nation incorporates 55 recognized minorities in addition to the Han majority, each with its own language and identity. During her free time, Jada explores China’s wonders, walking along the Great Wall, visiting the Olympic Stadium in Beijing and riding camels in Inner Mongolia. It is her work with her students, however, that will define Jada’s experience. Although she may be a cultural banana, falling into the Asian American way of thinking of herself as looking yellow on the outside and white on the inside, Jada leaves an indelible impression on the students and fellow teachers whose lives intersected with hers. In Banana Girl, she freely shares the frustration, joy and laughter experienced during her time in China.
