A riveting psychological thriller inspired by the never-caught Zodiac Killer, about a young detective determined to apprehend the serial murderer who destroyed her family and terrorized a city twenty years earlier. Caitlin Hendrix has been a Narcotics detective for six months when the killer at the heart of all her childhood nightmares reemerges: the Prophet. An UNSUB—what the FBI calls an unknown subject—the Prophet terrorized the Bay Area in the 1990s and nearly destroyed her father, the lead investigator on the case. The Prophet’s cryptic messages and mind games drove Detective Mack Hendrix to the brink of madness, and Mack’s failure to solve the series of ritualized murders—eleven seemingly unconnected victims left with the ancient sign for Mercury etched into their flesh—was the final nail in the coffin for a once promising career. Twenty years later, two bodies are found bearing the haunting signature of the Prophet. Caitlin Hendrix has never escaped the shadow of her father’s failure to protect their city. But now the ruthless madman is killing again and has set his sights on her, threatening to undermine the fragile barrier she rigidly maintains for her own protection, between relentless pursuit and dangerous obsession. Determined to decipher his twisted messages and stop the carnage, Caitlin ignores her father’s warnings as she draws closer to the killer with each new gruesome murder. Is it a copycat, or can this really be the same Prophet who haunted her childhood? Will Caitlin avoid repeating her father’s mistakes and redeem her family name, or will chasing the Prophet drag her and everyone she loves into the depths of the abyss?

As any police officer who has ever walked a beat or worked a crime scene knows, the street has its hot spots, patterns, and rhythms: drug dealers work their markets, prostitutes stroll their favorite corners, and burglars hit their favorite neighborhoods. But putting all the geographic information together in cases of serial violent crime (murder, rape, arson, bombing, and robbery) is highly challenging. Just ask the homicide detectives of the Los Angeles Police Department who hunted the Hillside Stranglers, or law enforcement officers in Louisiana who tracked the brutal South Side rapist. Geographic Profiling introduces and explains this cutting-edge investigative methodology in-depth. Used to analyze the locations of a connected series of crimes to determine the most likely area of offender residence, geographic profiling allows investigators and law enforcement officers to more effectively manage information and focus their investigations. This extensive and exhaustive work explains geographic profiling theories and principles, and includes an extensive review of the literature and research in the areas of criminal profiling, forensic behavioral science, serial violent crime, environmental criminology, and the geography of crime. For investigators and police officers deployed in the field, as well as criminal analysts, Geographic Profiling is a "must have" reference.

Recasting the forensic and everyday language of the FBI's descriptions of unidentified subjects, from suspects to criminals to corpses, UNSUB probes what it is to be "wanted." It explores our desire to have and to hold in contempt those subjects that threaten a society of securitization. Investigating a culture of terrorism, paranoia, and surveillance by rendering a world divided into victims and perpetrators, UNSUB plays on the differences between catching a predator and being a catch. Through ghostly descriptions of live bodies, the book scrutinizes the vicissitudes of anonymity and subjectivity, indistinction and identity. "By turning the forensic onto the forensic, Divya Victor splays the bodies of those wanted into bits of want: soldered-over scars and moulding desires, that glut of gut tissue and the rotting tongue's ability to speak another tongue. To UNSUB is not, as turns out, to unsubjectify, but to subjectify too highly. High as how meat goes when left too long by the side of the road. Like a graveyard, the poems make a more permanent point than its peoples: What we want is enough. And always too much."-Vanessa Place "This is a work under the auspices of resemblances, the unknown subject, the step just beyond, or under. In Atom Egoyan's Next of Kin, hoards of narrative are sapped into wasp facial features. In UNSUB, Divya Victor shows us how these narratives get charged by ethnicity, a place, a thievery and a poverty of emigrations, migrations now virtual. We are fluttered by identifiers, yes, we are, leaving us still, too often, facing losses. I just checked, poetry is still alive."-Ara Shirinyan

A unique forensic psychiatrist must decipher clues left behind by assassins attacking D.C. in this psychological thriller from the author of Color Blind. A band of ruthless assassins converges on a bank in Washington, D.C. They slaughter everyone inside and escape without stealing a dime, leaving only a message for police warning that another attack is coming. The attackers are more than willing to communicate who they are and what they want. The problem is, they only do so through cryptic messages hidden in a labyrinth of classic literature references. With the clock ticking down the hours and minutes until another bloodbath, Dr. Jenna Ramey and the rest of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit have a challenge profiling not one or two, but a dozen individual killers. But even if she can save the day, two enemies from Ramey’s past are lurking in her blind spot, ready to take advantage of her current preoccupation… “Just the gift for connoisseurs of multiple murders who also want to plume themselves on their knowledge of literary classics.”—Kirkus Reviews “Absorbing…Adding spice is Jenna’s special gift, grapheme-color synesthesia, which allows her to use colors she associates with people and situations to help her determine the truth.”—Publishers Weekly

A memoir from Charles Campisi, who, "from 1996 through 2014 ... headed NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau, working under four police commissioners and gaining a reputation as hard-nosed and incorruptible. When he retired, only one man on the 36,000-member force had served longer. During Campisi's IAB tenure, the number of New Yorkers shot, wounded, or killed by cops every year declined by almost 90 percent, and the number of cops failing integrity tests shrank to an equally startling low. But to achieve those exemplary results, Campisi had to triple IAB's staff, hire the very best detectives, and put the word out that bad apples wouldn't be tolerated"--Dust jacket flap.

In his four previous novels of suspense, Jonathan Nasaw gave readers a charming and unlikely hero against the forces of evil in former FBI agent E.L. Pender. Now, in The Boys from Santa Cruz, Pender faces his most terrifying foe to date. Like James Patterson and John Connolly, Jonathan Nasaw has proven time and again that he has an uncanny, almost eerie, knack for getting inside the labyrinthine and horrifying minds of the most deranged serial killers. In Fear Itself, Nasaw first introduced Pender, a rumpled, endearingly flawed investigator who immediately won readers’ hearts. In The Girls He Adored, Pender defeated a perverted psycho named Max, then went on to face The Machete Man in Twenty-Seven Bones, called a “skin-crawling, gory psycho-thriller” by the Scottish Daily Record. When last we left Pender, in Nasaw’s sexually charged thriller When She Was Bad, he took on a pair of mentally insane killers and nearly lost himself in the dark and blood-drenched recesses of their two twisted psyches. With his lust for terror and a frightening talent for getting deep under his readers’ skins, Nasaw promises to deliver more gripping action and unimaginably gruesome detail as he introduces readers to the bloodthirsty The Boys from Santa Cruz.

Quicklets: Your Reading Sidekick! ABOUT THE SHOW Criminal Minds Season 6 aired on CBS, and ran from September 22, 2010 until May 18, 2011. The show follows an elite team of FBI criminal investigators, known as the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), as its members travel the country working to solve grisly murder mysteries and arrest the serial killers responsible for them. During its 2005 premier season, Criminal Minds was the newest iteration of crime scene investigation TV programs, competing with such shows as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Crossing, Law & Order: SUV,and Medium, many of which were also broadcast on CBS. Given this context, Criminal Minds has consistently focused on setting itself apart from the crowd. To accomplish this, the show has regularly relied on both its cast of actors and its focus on psychological profiling. In Season 6, Criminal Minds continues building upon and further solidifies its reputation as a leader in the crime scene investigation genre. Some of the most common critiques of Criminal Minds argue that the show relies too much on tired cliches and boring stereotypes. Television critic David Zurawik has summarized the show by writing simply: Big talent meets weak script and every TV crime cliche known to prime time (Metacritic, Criminal Minds). While there are certainly moments throughout Season 6 in which this critique may be true, Criminal Minds has managed to pull together a strong team of actors and actresses whose engaging and convincing performances successfully keep the show exciting. MEET THE AUTHOR Charles Limley is a native of Colorado. After earning bachelors degrees in both English Literature and Humanities from the University of ColoradoBoulder, he entered the world of professional writing. He began his work with Hyperink during the fall of 2011. In addition to writing, Limley is an avid reader. He also loves bicycles, and has completed several long-distance bicycle tours. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Season 6 of Criminal Minds begins with the gripping conclusion of Season 5s unresolved cliffhanger finale. Agent Morgan is trapped, after being tied to a bed and forced to witness the murder of a local Los Angeles detective and the abduction of the detectives young daughter. The BAU must work quickly to locate Morgan and rescue the missing girl before the prolific serial killer known as The Prince of Darkness inflicts any further violence. Eventually, the team successfully stops the killer and is able to move on to investigating other unsolved criminal cases. As Season 6 unfolds, the BAU copes with several personnel changes. Agent Jareau leaves the team after Episode 2, and only makes short appearances in two later episodes. Following JJs departure, the BAU is joined by FBI cadet Ashley Seaver. She helps the team with its investigation during Episode 10, and becomes a regular character for the second half of the season. Finally, Agent Prentiss leaves the team following a particularly personal and brutal investigation in Episode 18. Buy a copy to keep reading! Ana Montes appeared to be a model employee of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Known to her coworkers as the Queen of Cuba, she was an overachiever who advanced quickly through the ranks of Latin American specialists to become the intelligence community's top analyst on Cuban affairs. But throughout her sixteen-year career at DIA, Montes sent Castro some of America's most closely guarded secrets and at the same time influenced what the United States thought it knew about Cuba. When she was finally arrested in September 2001, she became the most senior American intelligence official ever accused of operating as a Cuban spy from within the federal government. Unrepentant as she serves out her time in a federal prison in Texas, Montes remains the only member of the intelligence community ever convicted of espionage on behalf of the Cuban government. This inside account of the investigation that led to her arrest was written by Scott W. Carmichael, the DIA's senior counterintelligence investigator who persuaded the FBI to delve deeper into Montes activities. Although Montes did not fit the FBI's profile of a spy and easily managed to defeat the agency's polygraph exam, Carmichael became suspicious of her activities and, with the FBI, over a period of several years developed a solid case against her. Here he tells the story of that long and ultimately successful spy hunt. Carmichael reveals the details of their efforts to bring her to justice, offering readers a front-row seat for the first major U.S. espionage case of the twenty-first century. She was arrested less than twenty-four hours before learning details of the U.S. plan to invade Afghanistan post-September 11. Motivated by ideology and not money, Montes was one of the last "true believers" of the Communist era. Because her arrest came just ten days after 9/11, it went largely unnoticed by the American public. This book calls attention to the grave damage Montes inflicted on U.S. security--Carmichael even implicates her in the death of a Green Beret fighting Cuban-backed insurgent in El Salvador and the damage she would have continued to inflict had she not been caught.
